Pope Francis calls for prayers, expresses closeness to Yolanda victims
Pope Francis on Saturday asked the faithful to pray for victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda, which devastated much of the central Philippines this weekend.
The Pope, in a post on his Twitter account, also expressed closeness to Filipinos, referring to the Philippines as the "beloved islands."
Meanwhile, an article posted on the Vatican news portal said the Pope assured Filipinos of his prayers as they tried to recover from the devastation caused by the Category 5 cyclone.
"The storm churned across the archipelago country and was headed to Vietnam by Saturday evening," the article noted.
On Saturday evening, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said some 138 people had been confirmed dead in Yolanda's wake.
